Chameleon Youth, Manchester’s youth dance company, is calling out for new members for 2018/19. If you’re age 11 to 21 (Juniors 11-16 / Seniors 16-21) this is an incredible opportunity to be part of a dance company that is inspiring and different to the mainstream.
Based in Central Manchester and launched in 2016 by Company Chameleon, members of the youth company learn directly from a professional dance company, which for ten years, has toured and performed across the world giving new meaning to dance and movement.
As a member of Chameleon Youth, you will have the opportunity to:
- Train weekly with Company Chameleon’s professional dance artists.
- Create your own work and develop your own unique movement style.
- Take part in regular performance opportunities throughout the year.
Chameleon Youth is the only youth dance company in Manchester that is part of a professional dance company. Youth company members are taught by professional dance artists and benefit directly from the knowledge and experience gained through worldwide professional touring and performance.
In terms of dance style, the framework is provided by Chameleon’s unique movement language, which has developed from producing dance theatre for stage for the last ten years. From contemporary dance and capoeira to hip hop and ballet, members develop their skills through a rich mix of dance and movement influences.
Ellen James, 16, has been a member of the youth company for the last year, she said, “I love the people and the friendships and all the opportunities to perform. I’ve learnt new styles of contemporary dance, partnering and how to work with others”
Joe Taylor,14, first worked with Company Chameleon on STRIDE, our boys dance project delivered in partnership with Dance Manchester. Talking about being part of Chameleon Youth, he said,“Chameleon Youth has enabled me to dramatically improve my technique and choreographic skills, and it’s great to have the opportunity to work with professional dancers from Company Chameleon.”
Learning & Participation Officer, Sam Broadbent said, “Chameleon Youth is a unique opportunity for young dancers in Manchester, which provides direct access to a professional dance company, high quality training plus the space and support needed to develop as a young dance artist.”
